Victim vs. Victor. Steel vs. Fire.

I was four days away from getting $500,000 in funding.

Then the FBI knocked on my door.

It turned out that the principal of the capital firm was under investigation with a FINRA violation, similar to Martha Stewart.

I had trained my replacement at my job at Centriq Training in Kansas City, where I was the lead web trainer.

I now had no job and no funding.

So, I got really drunk that night.  Through my hangover the next morning… READ MORE »

How we got 55,000 Downloads in the first 30 Days of The Bad Crypto Podcast.

Never before have I been a part of something like this. Joel Comm and I started this Bad Crypto Podcast one month ago today. And it is taking off like a rocket. 🚀

30 days ago, we decided to teach others as we learned about cryptocurrencies and began to understand the blockchain and its impact on technology.

We launched The Bad Crypto Podcast on July 18th, 2017.

I made a comment to Joel on FB messenger…

Immediately we took action.

We launched the first episode on July 18th and since then, we’ve recorded 11 episodes. We’ve grown audiences on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

We’ve received over 50 reviews on iTunes and over 30 on our Facebook page.

Now, one month in, during those first 30 days, we had over 55,000 downloads and subscribers. READ MORE »

Ancient Wisdom and the Search for Universal Truth

Eight-Ben-Mayan-Calendar-3d-Glyph-TheCalendar.org_I’ve always found ancient wisdom to be fascinating… For those that know me well, know that I’ve studied several forms of esoteric knowledge, including Reiki, Huna, Peruvian shamanism, Egyptian mystery schools, daily meditation, and the Mayan esoteric path… as well as the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, the Sutras, and the Vedas. I’ve also studied Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth and the Hero’s Journey. I’ve run the gamut on ancient wisdom.

Whereas most people stop seeking ancient wisdom after reading just one ancient text, I’ve never stopped seeking the truth.

Fact: There are 13 moons each year, 13 moons x 28 days = 364 days. So technically, we should have a 13 month / 13 moon calendar instead of the 12 month one.

Royals Baseball Playoff Run Rejuvenates Kansas City. #MLB #Royals

Royals Make Me Feel Twelve Again!

17178b_lgMan oh man!  To be a resident of the Kansas City area these last couple of weeks has been amazing.  It’s been like a dream. The whole Kansas City area is happy! Mizzou fans, Kansas Jayhawks fans, and KSU fans are all harmonious with one another in their KC Royals fandom.

The Royals have, as of right now, won 6 straight MLB playoff games this year. And dating back to 1985, they have won nine playoff games in a row. We are watching something historic, as the whole country has begun to love the formerly lovable losers, the KC Royals. We are winners now!

Starting out on Monday Night Football, I took my 12-year-old son to Arrowhead Stadium, September 29th, to see the Kansas City Chiefs take on the New England Patriots.

In that game, the Chiefs curb-stomped the Patriots.  I mean, they kicked the shit out of them 41-14.  That is an ass-whomping, if I’ve ever seen one.  Versus Gray Hoodie, Tom Brady and the Patriots? What? What?!  That’s unheard of.  Whoomp, There it is!

Blown Away. My favorite show, Impractical Jokers, just sent me the Mother Lode of Swag Bags

IJI’m not a big TV guy.  However, I love comedy.  Laughing is my favorite thing aside from “bah chicka bah bah” time.  🙂 Having done improv and stand-up comedy since the mid-90s, it takes something special to get my seal of comedy approval.  And I can say, unequivocally, that Impractical Jokers is the funniest thing that I’ve ever seen.  I can’t even tell you what is second place.  Impractical Jokers is that funny.

So, whenever I happen to watch an episode, I’m always tweeting about how funny it was.

Why Weird Al is the King of Content & Social Media

When people ask, “Who are your favorite bands of all-time?” to people from my generation, you hear the usual suspects… The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, The Beastie Boys, Mötley Crüe, and Pearl Jam. Those are a few that I rattle off… and I typically forget Weird Al Yankovic. After hearing his latest album tonight and seeing how he continues to weave in relevant content pertaining to today’s trends is nothing short of amazing, I’ve recognized that he has an amazing way to stay relevant with his content.

I’m completely in awe in how he has launched his 14th studio album this week, Mandatory Fun, and has launched a video each day of this week, so far. And he is busting out 8 videos total in 8 days? That’s amazing! He is a content creation machine!

The social media buzz around Weird Al is exploding this week. According to the data that I pulled from BuzzSumo, Yankovic has had 1,605 articles written about him THIS WEEK. (This article is #1606)

Those 1605 articles, so far, have generated 1,605,689 shares. Shares. Not visitors, clicks or traffic. Shares. Weird Al owns social media this week. READ MORE »

How to Explain Big Data to a Five-Year-Old

One of the biggest buzzwords ever, it seems, is “Big Data”. But what EXACTLY is big data? It might seem a little condescending, but for those who aren’t in the industry, explaining big data requires some “dumbing down.” If you’re in the position to explain this to someone with zero experience in it, who isn’t tech savvy, or who comes from an entirely different field, leave the jargon out and instead focus on explanations and similes they’ll understand.

A perfect example is when the CEO asks for a quick rundown—and her background is in corporate leadership, she uses an old smartphone, and simply isn’t on the same page as you. Don’t get frustrated. This is your time to shine. READ MORE »

Big Props to @Facebook, a @McDonalds Employee and @United Airlines

Screenshot 2014-05-06 01.50.59Most of the time, people will use social media to bitch about something or some brand online. Rarely will people take the time to write a blog post PRAISING a company.

Hold your breath, folks, I’m about to do just that. The Facebook F8 Conference was amazing.  A McDonald’s employee went OUT OF HER WAY for me in a big way on Sunday. And United made me breathe a sigh of relief, I’ll tell you why.

Just Another Kansas Storm. No Big Deal. [HDR Photo Gallery]

20140413_145407_1Drove to Topeka, KS this morning, as my daughter’s cheerleading team was a finalist in the US Cheerleading National Finals!  Out of all of the 8 year old cheerleading teams in the US, my daughter’s team placed fifth.  I never thought my daughter would be a cheerleader, but after she expressed interest, we figured it would be infinitely better than sitting on the couch all the time.  So far, she’s loved it.

On the way home, we were treated to a nice Kansas storm.

Lessons from my First Tech Startup Failure, Ten Years Ago.

Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 3.36.46 AMMy first tech startup, MethodLaboratories was a big web project that started with an idea from my good friend, Jonathan Shaun.

Methodlabs was where we featured artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creatives, gave them free webspace, showcased their work and even created t-shirts for the artists and designers that submitted their work.

To make the project a reality, I learned and mastered HTML, CSS & Javascript, as well as designing the whole project.

We also brought in the talented Alexander Petrides, who helped do all of the tough, custom modifications on the code.  He actually built the Dropbox-like feature, and helped customize our user profiles system and many other things.  Together, we grew the concept into a large web property with tens of thousands of members.

In many ways, we were a bit ahead of our time:  READ MORE »
