Locking down high blood pressure during the CORONA-VIRUS crisis QUARANTINE

Focusing on keeping your blood pressure within healthy levels has always been important, but even more so in the time of COVID-19.

Researchers from ACC are saying that early findings suggest you’re at risk of getting corona-virus if you are elderly and it could potentially raise your risk of experiencing serious complications from the corona-virus at any age if you suffer from high blood pressure.

Hazards Reported Ahead | Avoid them

Many different factors can be contributors to high blood pressure. It is advised to use extra caution with:

  • Various prescription drugs. Some forms of oral birth control, mental health drugs, corticosteroids, cancer medications and immunosuppressants can impact your blood pressure. It is a good plan to discuss this with your physician or pharmacist and self-monitor your blood pressure while taking any of these medications.

  • Medications available over the counter. With local allergies at full speed it is not unlikely some Kentuckians will need to take a decongestant or painkiller to combat the sinus pressure. Painkillers such as NSAIDs have been linked to an increase in blood pressure in some people. It has been recommended by the American Heart Association that, “people with heart concerns should limit or avoid them.”

  • Harmless or Not? Tasty Treats. Did you know that there are licorice supplements that have been found to raise blood pressure? Even some cured meats can interact with various antidepressants used in the USA.

  • Strong Drinks. Alcohol and high amounts of caffeine can impact your blood pressure as well. Less than four cups of caffeinated beverages are recommended per day for those who suffer from high blood pressure.

Circle of Stress | Managing the effects of stress on your body

Poor management of stress can lead to bad habits. Many who struggle to manage their stress levels with healthy tools such as exercise, social support and relaxation fall into the viscous cycle of stress-induced bad habits, such as poor diet. A poor diet increases the risk of developing high blood pressure. Managing high blood pressure can be stressful for some and they find themselves turning the to same bad habits that contributed to the high blood pressure in the first place. Make sure to talk with your doctor about any concerns you have. Please do your best to manage your health conditions during the pandemic.

Staying healthy with High Blood Pressure:

the best defense | A Good Offense

Those individuals who have underlying health conditions or high blood pressure should follow the CDC recommendations to the letter. Following the game plan is essential to a good offense and thus a great defense. Here are some recommendations to follow such as social distancing and proper hand-washing along with various other practices that can prevent COVID-19’s spread.

What the Doctor Ordered |medical advice

Unless otherwise advised by your physician, according to a statement from the American Heart Association, the Heart Failure Society of America and the American College of Cardiology they found most patients who get diagnosed with COVID-19 should continue their medication for high blood pressure. The risk of stopping these medications could outweigh any potential benefits. Everyone is individual and their health care should be also. Be sure to consult with your physician before starting or stopping any treatment, especially high blood pressure medications. Remember there are social distancing healthcare options here in Kentuckiana through various medical offices to receive virtual or tele-medicine visits. Remember to keep extra medication on hand. Perhaps it would be a good plan to have enough medications to last several months, should a shelter in place mandate be ordered.

Recognize It is time to call 911 | thinking FAST

When blood pressure rises quickly to readings of 180/120

or greater it is likely a hypertensive crisis. Remember to BE

FAST. If you or someone you love experiences these symptoms
