“Imagine a chunk of a big city ripped from Earth in the 1980s, set down on a fantastical planet, and cursed with one simple spell: every time you break a rule, you turn a bit more into a monster. Now jump forward 75 years and let’s see what happens.”
LAWFUL is one of the most personal and fantastical stories I’ve ever written. There’s a lot in there about my specific Asian American experience growing up in the 1980s and that only semi-conscious, desperate feeling that following the rules to the letter will provide safety. And there are monsters.
