The story we have been a part of will live long in the minds of men.

The BBC television show Merlin was filmed in a variety of beautiful and intriguing locations. This site aims to share information about and images of those locations.

We started visiting these sites simply because we’re fans of the show – but we soon became a fan of these places for their own sake. Locations such as Chateau de Pierrefonds, Puzzlewood, Dunraven Bay, Porth yr Ogof and Burnham Beeches are well worth a visit, whether you find beautiful people and unicorns there or not. This site can help you visit them virtually, and also provide information if you plan to visit them actually.

exploring this site

To (virtually) explore the locations on this site, you have a number of options:

  • click on all posts in the main menu to browse all the entries, in date order (most recent first),
  • click on list of posts in the main menu to view a list of all entries, in alphabetical order,
  • click on locations posts in the main menu to view a list of the entries that focus only on the locations, in alphabetical order, or
  • select from the individual categories listed on the sidebar.

Perhaps inevitably, we’re not only interested in filming locations but in other behind-the-scenes aspects of filming, and also in places associated with the Arthurian legends, so you’ll find a variety of such entries on this site.

Please feel free to comment with your own knowledge or experience of the locations, or suggest links to other information on the net. If appropriate, we will update the main entries to reflect your input.

So, on with our virtual tour… We trust you’ll have fun!

caveat emptor

I’m sure you’re all sensible people! And I’m sure you realise that all information presented on this site is as correct as we can get it at the time – however, things change. Also, some ‘commercial’ locations close over winter (e.g. Puzzlewood, National Trust properties) while others operate on reduced hours (e.g. English Heritage properties). Other locations can actually be dangerous (e.g. Dunraven Bay, Porth yr Ogof). So, it is always worth checking the official site for the location (or indeed the tides in Porthcawl) before making firm travel plans.

If you find any info on this website that is wrong or misleading, please let us know. Or if you have anything useful to add, please make a comment about it.

Thank you very kindly for your understanding!

  1. Hi,

First and formost your website is awesome. I look everyday. You do outstanding work. Ok, now my question. Do you have more information on The Fires of Idirsholas filming locations? It has become a little obsession of mine. When i say more info i mostly mean more info on the castles and ruins used.

    Happy Post Christmas,

    Kevin

    1. Hello, Kevin, and happy post Christmas to you as well!

Thank you so much for all your kind words. This site is a labour of true love, and I only wish I had more time available for it. If you find it useful, then I know the effort is worthwhile!

You’ve no doubt checked out the existing entries that mention The Fires of Idirsholas: https://merlinlocations.com/category/merlin/season-2/ep-212-the-fires-of-idirsholas/
The only extra info I have is that the moors used when approaching the castle were just south of Trefil Quarry. The room where they found the sleeping knights, and fought them, was the Council Chambers set redressed.

It’s going to take me a while to get to the ‘rewatch’ of this episode, I’m sorry, but I will get there eventually!

Thank you again for your comment, query and support.

      all the best, Julie

  2. Hello

I just wondered when and where the next Merlin meet up would take place in 2016

    Look forward to your reply

    Anouk

    1. Hello, Anouk. Thank you for your query! If there is another Merlin Meet Up in Pierrefonds this year, then it is likely to coincide with the Medieval Fair again. They have held that during the same weekend in August for the past three years, but they don’t announce it officially until closer to the date. I’ll have to leave it to you to decide whether it’s safe to predict the exact date at this point!

I hope it all happens, and that you have fun. :-)

  3. For USA Colin fans: – The Rhode Island International Film Festival is showing “Waiting for You” at 7pm on 12th August 2017.

  4. PS – Bradley will be reunited with his Troll stepmother! Sarah Parish is also cast in the same production!

  5. Hi, this is 2022. I’m researching Merlin. I still love it. It’s still exciting. The cast are superb. I wish I could go to all the places it was filmed at. But a super series that I’m gutted ever ended.

  6. Hi, I meant I’m rewatching Merlin. Not researching it. It is brilliant. I love the cast and the places it was filmed. I am still sorry it ended.

    1. Thanks for commenting, Andrea! I agree with you about the cast – I think they’re brilliant. The cast, the locations, and the cinematography really lifted it all into something superb.

I hope that one day you’ll be able to visit the locations yourself.
