RICHMOND, Va. (October 6, 2009) ? The Colonial Athletic Association has announced its men’s basketball Silver Anniversary team, which includes 16 former CAA Players of the Year, nine All-America selections and seven NBA draft picks.

As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2009-10, the CAA is recognizing Silver Anniversary teams in 21 championship sports.  The teams are selected by a panel of current and former head coaches in the conference.

Men’s basketball has brought much acclaim to the CAA since the league’s inception in 1985 and the conference has produced numerous standout performers and teams. Five schools have captured four CAA championships ? George Mason (1989, 1999, 2001, 2008), UNC Wilmington (2000, 2002, 2003, 2006), Old Dominion (1992, 1995, 1997, 2005), Richmond (1988, 1990, 1991, 1998) and VCU (1996, 2004, 2007, 2009). Navy won the first two CAA titles (1986, 1987) and East Carolina (1993) and James Madison (1994) have each claimed one CAA crown.

George Mason became the first CAA school to reach the NCAA Final Four in 2006, defeating Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut. Navy advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1986 with victories over Tulsa, Syracuse and Cleveland State. Richmond made the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1988 by beating Indiana and Georgia Tech.
