We’re closing out the week with a peek #InsideSAB and rehearsals for Christopher Wheeldon’s SCÈNES DE BALLET, which is part of our upcoming Workshop program in June as well as NYCB’s spring season this month!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Choreographed by Mr. Wheeldon on SAB students, the ballet premiered in the spring of 1999 and was the second work Wheeldon made for New York City Ballet. On a stage mimicking a rehearsal studio, SCÈNES DE BALLET displays 64 student dancers and their implied reflections in the mirror as they perfect their craft.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our students got the chance to rehearse with Mr. Wheeldon earlier this year and have been hard at work perfecting this challenging piece ever since.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Get tickets to see this impressive ballet with NYCB, at SAB’s Workshop Performances, or even better - both! #LinksInBio

"The domain of the ballet dancers is not earth, but air." - SAB co-founder Lincoln Kirstein #WednesdayWisdom

Learn more about Mr. Kirstein at our upcoming Ballet Connoisseurship lecture on May 15, during which Silas Farley, former New York City Ballet dancer, dance scholar, and current Armstrong Artist in Residence in Ballet in The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, along with Linda Murray, Curator of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division at the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts, will give us a look into Lincoln Kirstein’s life, arts patronage, favorite artists, and path to partnering with George Balanchine to start a new, enduring American ballet tradition.

Our National Visiting Fellows are back in the SAB studios for their second and final week-long session of the program. In addition to deepening their knowledge of the SAB curriculum, observing classes, and spending time with our full-time faculty members, each Fellow will have the opportunity to teach our students this week. We can't wait for them to bring their expertise and enthusiasm to our B1 and B2 classes!

SAB is currently accepting applications for the 2024-25 National Visiting Fellows program. If you or someone you know is a U.S.-based classical ballet instructor with a proven commitment to teaching students from diverse backgrounds, we encourage you/them to apply to be considered for next year's cohort.

Happy #InternationalDanceDay! Of course, for the past 90 years, every day has been a celebration of dance here at SAB! Sharing a snapshot from our 90th Anniversary Ball performance earlier this year that we think captures the joy dance brings all of us!

George Balanchine’s fond memories of his childhood experiences performing with the Imperial Ballet in Russia inspired him to create a similar opportunity for SAB’s young students. Head over to our blog to read the latest #SAB90 post on the history of how several ballets in the New York City Ballet repertoire were choreographed to include students from the School, including the holiday classic GEORGE BALANCHINE'S THE NUTCRACKER®, MOZARTIANA, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and more.
