Rachel Carson died in 1964 on this day from cancer. In 1962 Silent Spring was published linking the use of herbicides and insecticides (biocides) to cancer and to the loss of birds, bees, fish, and humans too. After her death, Earth Day was declared on April 22. Maria Popova wrote beautifully about Rachel today @mariapopova so go there to read her words! She’s better at it than I! I read a news bit this morning that Flaco the owl had 4 types of rat poison in his blood. And not to be a downer on this beneficent April Day, but let’s be mindful of each other in all ways, in all forms, be we winged, or footed, or tiny beyond sight and ancient beyond knowing. “It is not half so important to know as it is to feel.” Feel today. And take a break from the biocides!!!! Let Spring SPRING!

It’s terrifying but I suppose I’ll have to start. So glad I did! This is a letter found on my friend’s wall, a testament to the beginning of most projects: restless wandering and dusting, and getting in everyone’s way.
