Spiral Rib Kilt Hose

Traditional men’s kilt hose worked in a worsted or medium weight sport yarn, with a simple to work but fancy looking crossed stitch spiral rib worked around the cuff and then in columns down each side of the leg. The spiral rib is then split in half at the heel flap divide and worked as a two stitch twist mock cable down the sides of the foot. Seed stitch rib columns are worked down the leg, heel flap, and foot. (Of course, these would also be nice for women's knee-highs, too!)

Materials
Yarn: Sturdy wool or wool/nylon
blend suggested. Worsted weight:
approx. 8 oz/227 grams; 540 yds/494
meters. Sport weight: approx. 8 oz/
227 grams; 660 yds/604 meters.
Double Point Needles: Worsted
weight: Size 4 US/3.5 mm.
Sport weight: Size 3 US/3.25 mm.
Or size needed to obtain correct gauge.
Optional extra needles: smaller set of
dp needles to be used to tighten
ribbing of garter, 1 or 2 sizes smaller
than main needles.
Notions:Yarn needle;
Stitch marker
Gauge: 5 (6) sts = 1”/2.5 cm in st st.

Sizes (see note for size options):
Men’s Small, Medium, Large
Finished Measurements of
Circumferences:

Smallest size: worked with sport yarn
at 6 sts=1” and smaller set of numbers:
Cuff and Calf: 12”;
Lower Leg/Ankle and Foot: 7”.
Medium size: worked with worsted
yarn at 5 sts=1” and first set of
numbers, or sport yarn at 6 sts=1” and
second set of numbers:
Cuff and Calf: 14”;
Lower Leg/Ankle and Foot: 8”.
Largest size: worked with worsted
yarn at 5 sts=1” and larger set of
numbers:
Cuff and Calf: 17”;
Lower Leg/Ankle and Foot: 10”.

Sizing Notes: Sizes are based on the yarn weight and gauge, and which set of numbers are used. In this way, 3
sizes can be made using the two sets of numbers in the pattern. If you use worsted weight yarn and the smaller
numbers, or sport weight yarn and the larger numbers, you will make the standard medium width sock. If you
use the thicker worsted weight yarn and the larger set of numbers, you will make the largest width sock. If you
use the thinner sport weight yarn and the smaller set of numbers, you will make the narrowest width sock.
Socks are best knit with slight negative ease, so if between sizes, choose a smaller size. With any choice,
adjust lengths of Leg and Foot to desired lengths where stated in pattern.

Popcorn Lace Socks

Using ribbing in your socks doesn’t have to be boring! These socks incorporate 3 steps of ribbing in their design. First, the custom ribbing on the cuff is designed to flow into the lines of the Popcorn and Lace Rib pattern on the leg. Then this simple combination of stitches is both functional and decorative at the same time. The ribbed structure provides a good fit by stretching for many leg sizes, while the easy popcorns and eyelet lace add visual interest. Finally, the popcorns are eliminated on the foot where the bumps might feel uncomfortable in a shoe, while the eyelet lace rib is continued seamlessly down the foot for a fine fit with fancy looks.

Hot Pockets Felted Slippers

These felted wool slippers are quick to knit, and extra warm. Shown here before and after felting.  A pocket is added to the top of a basic beginner’s sock that holds a felted wool pouch insert. The pouch is filled with dried rice or grains before closing, and then it is micro waved and inserted into the slipper pocket for long lasting warmth. Novelty yarn may be added to the cuffs and pocket tops for fun effects after felting. (See additional photos, some with novelty yarn, on my General Knitting page!)

Also wonderful without pocket for a basic felted slipper sock! (Formerly published in the Winter 2003 issue of INKnitters Magazine)
