The Marshmallow Challenge

Yesterday, we were asked to create a free standing structure within 18 minutes using the following items:

  • 1 yard of yarn
  • 1 yard of adhesive tape
  • 20 pcs. of Spaghetti noodles
  • 1 big marshmallow

Aside that it should stand on its own, the marshmallow should be on top. During the first attempt we failed, we concentrated too much on the structure. We over thinked. Second attempt, I made a joke by sticking 3 spaghetti noodles to the marshmallow thus forming a tripod. We didn’t take it seriously and proceed again the construction of the base. Result! Major fail! As soon as we put the mallow on top, the structure went down =(

Sir Jun, my office mate and the facilitator of the activity, showed us short video wherein it tackles the marshmallow challenge. I learned a lot from that video.

First, I over think too much. Sometimes, simple ideas are the best solutions.

Second, when working with a team, everyone’s voice must be heard.

Third, Relax. Don’t let pressure take you over.

After that, we tried to create another one. This time using the simple joke I pulled out earlier. And the result:
