NEW – Pico Flex Table Dolly

Since the inception of the SpiderTrax dolly, there have been quite a few iterations from a number of different companies. Those units on the market were either still pretty large, or built with poor quality. This time around, I wanted to focus on flexibility and portability. I tried to achieve the highest quality possible, in the smallest footprint, and still make it the most affordable for the community. So today i'm showing you guys the Pico Flex Table dolly. It's still based on the 4 wheel two axle design which I showed a few years ago on the SpiderTrax. The reason for this is because it is much more time consuming to properly align any three wheel design (in case you were considering one). There's no need to look into any other table dolly system as this one still performs as good, and traveling with it is even easier. You'll also be quite happy with the initial price.

Although you can spin your dolly around like a madman, when used slowly they can create some interesting footage. Here's a two year old video I shot when experimenting with my first dolly. Just slight rotation moving slowly on a table.

It's as small as you can go, while still being able to mount a regular sized Fluid head and support a normal sized Canon DSLR. The main purpose of this product is to just have fun and get creative shots. There are three threaded mounting points to attach friction arms which allow for the lowest possible angle in a camera, as well as adding a number of accessories. Of course if you want to sling a DSLR upside down (as shown in the video), you can counterbalance the weight with another accessory (notice the LED light in the video used with the upside down DSLR).

The Pico is complete fun for iPhones, GoPro cameras, Small Point and shoot HD Video cameras (like my HX9V), and Micro Four Thirds. Perfect for that new Sony NEX-5n, NEX-7, or even Olympus EP-3. You can purchase the Pico alone, which is a great price. There's a bundle with a friction arm which brings the price up slightly. The Pico Flex Skater Table Dolly and Accessories are available now. @chrsanch - Use a fluid head or large ball head for your camera to a more solid connection. Yes the wood should be smooth that you run on.

  2. chrsanch

    Hello,
I just received mine and tried it and so far I'm a bit dissappointed with the result. I was trying to emulate the same effect from a slider by straighening the wheels and directing the dslr to a 90 degrees angle. The outcome was a bit shaky, I'm not sure if there's a problem with the bearings or the wheels uneven surface. I used a soft surfaced wood. Or probably I'm using this for a different purpose? Can this pico dolly emulate the smooth panning from an slider?
By the way I used 50mm on t3i.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Interested in purchasing the dolly, do you have a distributor in Australia? or do you ship to Australia?

@Archie - Sorry no solid ideas for a track, and the 717 head will work, but it's a tight squeeze. You can also your the Pico Flex Dolly upside down and put the head on that way for extra clearance. Here's another one httpss://cheesycam.com/fancier-small-camera-ball-head-mount/

The Pico Dolly looks very interesting, but you need to export it. I had to pay USD 10.99 plus Shipping for the Pico Shark Clip (that you sell for USD 6.95).

What is the productname of the clear plastic box shown to the right of the iPhone setup?

I am looking for a waterproof box to take time lapse pictures with my Samsung Galaxy S2 outdoor. Will this box do?

Got one-very cool and perfect... waiting for stepper motor drive!!!!

    kind regards from munich-germany

Amazing ! Please make the shipping for Canada available. You'll get more orders than you can handle, I promise!!

  9. Andy

Is there a fluid head you recommend to put on this. With my 7D on the friction arm I seem to get some shake and I think that a fluid head would help that. I just don't know which one to use.

@CoolRoomEnt - Thanks! Gear is one simple thing that can improve the quality of footage you capture, but you still need the vision (or work with people who have the vision). Philip Bloom has great vision and creates excellent timeless stories.

  13. Just ordered mine and I can't wait! Emm, if you only knew how many products I've purchased (and knew NOT to...) over the last two years because of vids and reviews on CheesyCam you would/should have a signanature series! Philip Bloom is cool and all but that cat is NOT a DIY nor guerilla-indie filmmaker. You are MY Philip Bloom, bruh! Thank you.

@Jordan - We may have some distributors listing this Thursday or Friday on eBay for International orders. PNC was unable to take on the effort, so several units were sent to retailers. I'll post more information as soon as that is confirmed.

  27. Jordan

Man, these things just look so awesome! I really, really want one, but I live in Australia! 🙁 Any idea if you will be able to do orders outside the US soon?

  28. Vince

Ok so we have made it to Amazon. But at this stage it looks like it won't ship international. I'm in Australia and it says NO! Hope it changes in the near future. Don't need one, same as my steadicam but hell i want to play.

I received mine the other day and like it so far.

However I find the friction arm can barely support a canon 60d with no battery grip and tokina 11-16.

I'd like to mount my ball head to the unit but the thread coming out of it is too skinny for my standar ball head. What type of adapter do I need to fit this onto a normal ball head?

@dim3m - I don't ship these items, but as i've mentioned to other before the tracking number is generated when the label is printed from Paypal. This does not mean the item has shipped. If you ordered anything after Sept 6th, that was for the second pre-order batch. Just keep an eye on the tracking info, as soon as the post office has it, they would have updated the tracking info.

  32. Hi Emm,

I've received the first shipment of my Pico Dolly and really happy with it. I am still waiting on 2 more shipments. I have already received the tracking number on 9/6 and 9/7. Any updates on these?

    Thanks

  33. Bob Underwood

Just received my Pico Dolly today and tried it out with my GL2 and right out of the box it performed like a champ. After being a bit burned-out by the stress of commercial production this little gem is getting me excited again with all its creative possibilities. Thanks for helping me get my mojo rising again, and sooner than the expected Sept 29th delivery, too! Thanks so much!

  35. Emm

    Post author

@dim3m - The shipping information in Paypal just means that the label was printed. It does not mean it actually went out the door on that day. It was meant to ship on the 12th, so it should be in a few days later.

  36. Hi Emm,

I've placed orders and gotten the shipping info. But havn't received the product yet. Any word where they are shipping from? which state? i'm in CA

  37. Well, I ordered one of these last night & have already received a shipping notice with tracking number. Pleasant surprise. Excited to try out some small circular DSLR shots and maybe build a portable dolly for higher, outdoor work.

Anyone have any suggestions for an inexpensive, sturdy, portable dolly other than throwing a smooth board onto sawhorses or a keyboard stand?

    Emm-

Canadian too, and I'd love one. Just throw it up on ebay on a buyitnow auction. Put a few available, and we'd be able to pick one up. Let me know if you do!

  41. You're saying that the wheels on the pico dolly are different from that dolly on the video. Would it be easier to get a set of the wheels you used in that video and slap those on, when I want to use it with those strut rails? You got the rails from Home Depot?

  42. Emm

    Post author

@Apostolos - Those are strut rails, but the wheels are no different. You would have to find a set of rails to meet the width of these new wheels.

  43. Hey Emm:

I'd like to try to use the pico dolly in a similar configuration as this.

    httpss://cheesycam.com/im-late-but-should-be-worth-it/

    What are these railings called?

  44. So, I went ahead and ordered a Pico dolly. I even got cheeseplates from Rob, the Canadian guy above, to try to make one based on the Glidecam cheeseplate. I think it is feasible even for a guy like me, who cannot build anything by hand. But now, I need a couple of those painter's pole adapters, Emm, come on make some!

  45. J Toha

@videoguy2009 - Not harsh on Emm at all. We enjoy his blog and tips and we have benefitted heaps from his contribution. Now that he came up with a neat and useful gadget, we simply want to show our support. Perhaps too eagerly lol.

  46. videoguy2009

I think everyone is being too harsh on Emm...

He has stated that he is not involved in the distribution of the product.

I think a lot of the reason people don't ship internationally is because there is a lot more risk involved for scams.

A friend of mine sold his lens on ebay and a guy in hong kong bought it. He shipped it there, just for the guy to open some bull-**** ebay claim that it was not as described, and demanding a partial refund. So he could either be forced to pay $65 in return shipping for the guy to send it back, or give the guy a $50 refund.

There are a lot of international scams out there, so I think that's the reason a lot of US companies choose to avoid it.

  47. Cam

I find it amazing how companies find it too cumbersome to ship internationally, or even to Alaska. The age of globalization is upon us, and the only economic growth in the world is coming from emerging markets like Brazil, India, China, etc.

This is nothing against Emm, please keep preaching the word!

  48. Emm

    Post author

@Apostolos - You are correct. The adapter will be available again soon (hopefully) and i'll usually blog when it is.

  49. So, if I'm understanding you correctly you build the dolly and the painter pole adapter and you have that outfit P&C handle distribution and shipping?

I'm interested in both products actually.

  50. J Toha

Emm, sent an email earlier. Yes I used a similar service like what Nikita mentioned, e.g Shipito. But in my case, to Singapore we use Vpost or Borderlinx. Items get sent to these local offices and then we pay them to ship it to our homes.

Can you or your agent send a Paypal invoice or make it available for non-US Paypal account and then we give you the address to send it to?

    Otherwise it's such a shame really :/

  51. Bob

As others have mentioned, the seller does not accept paypal from NON USA paypal accounts. This is crazy. It has NOTHING to do with shipping.

I live in Canada and can have it shipped to my US address and go pick it up, no problem. So why won't the seller ([email protected]) accept non US paypal accounts?
I have a verified Canadian account. The payment goes right into their account as $65 USD. Please ask them to simply tick the box that allows non US Paypal payments.

  52. Jayhas

No problem Emm, I'll keep on waiting on this one.

@HD-tography - Nice, much better looking then the one I made. Could never get my hands on those cheeseplates, so had to make do with regular ms bars and drilled them myself.

On another note, I hope to show my 4' RC motorized bearing slider built based on those skateboard carriages here soon. Full DIY, through know-how gained courtesy of CheesyCam community.

  53. Emm

    Post author

@Jayhas - Sorry, it's very difficult to find companies that will take on that task. I'm not the only one. There's literally hundreds of large companies that won't ship over seas due to the nature of it. Regardless of what people say, it really is quite cumbersome. Hoping that I could find someone in the next few weeks to start dealing with International.

  54. HD-tography

Yeah Emm, when ya gonna ship to Canada? (Sorry couldn't resist, I would even buy one at that price!)

Just FYI: USPS has flat rate Priority Mail® International Flat Rate Boxes

    https://ircalc.usps.gov/?country=10054

This would EASILY fit in a USPS-Produced Medium Box:
    13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" or 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2".
    Maximum weight 20 pounds
    Expected Delivery 6 - 10 business days

for ONLY $27.95 USD (Yes... we are already used to these prices Emm)

    https://ircalc.usps.gov/MailServices.aspx?country=10054&m=13&p=0&o=1&mt=12

Tracking included, insurance for a few bucks more...

Anyways, for all you Canadians waiting for an inexpensive option, I got around to building the DIY SpiderTrax Video Dolly found here:

    httpss://cheesycam.com/diy-spidertrax-video-dolly/

Used a $20 skateboard from Canadian tire with nice aluminum trucks, black smooth wheels, and ABEC 7 bearings... then I even sold the wooden deck to some kid locally for $10 so it's a no brainer...

You WILL need a cheeseplate base though, and it so happens I have 5 extra ones from Glidecam that I don't need so they're for sale on eBay… just wanna get rid of them so I’ll just charge a minimal fee and actual shipping:

    https://www.ebay.com/sch/friendly_sniper/m.html?_nkw=Glidecam&_sacat=0&_odkw=&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313

The whole build is like $35-$40 including the plate and the dolly is VERY solid and runs super smooth!

Great option until Emm can hook us up with this one!

P.S. In case you care to see photos of my build using these options, here they are:

Having been a regular lurker here plus learning and making all the DIY stuff that you have 'preached' so far, I guess I'll have to be content on DIYing this one too:). In fact I already have one similar to Jarrod's but can't resist the size and look of the Pico.

  59. Jun B

Super excited to try this out. Are you able to freely steer the wheels, or do they always have to be locked and in place?

  60. I see that your dolly will run down a smooth surface. Have you tried it on tracks like a slider so you can repeat the movement over and over again? Looks good!

  61. Rob

Maybe try Amazon Marketplace and have them fulfill the order. So they'd keep the stock and ship overseas. You'd probably have to bump the price to makeup for the fee they charge, though.

  62. Emm

    Post author

@Apostolos - Because I'm not good at packing, shipping, receiving, tracking, taking emails, etc. I send the product to P&C to handle all the distribution.

  63. So P&C is your own outfit? That pico dolly seems very interesting and I'm also interested in those painter pole adapters. What's the price on those and when are they coming out?

  64. This looks spot on and one of the reasons i love DSLR film making the big fun factor and little toys you can use.

Any chance of some getting put up on ebay for us over in the u.k.

I know shipping is a killer but shouldn't be to much more then shipping a flycam or other dslr kit.

@y2j - As shown in the video it works great with heavy DSLR cameras, but I wouldn't go crazy whipping it around too quickly. Once you have the tool, it's all about practicing with it and finding your mojo. Slow steady movements.

  68. y2j

I got the impression from one of your comments that this will work but not great for DSLR but will get good results with only a compact point and shoot?

  69. As a goofy aside, this is a great time to recollect that those opportunistic assholes at P+S Technik are still pricing the Skater Mini (referred to in this CheesyCam.com post) at almost $7,000. They try to bury that price through a reseller/rentals network, but that's what you pay. If you're stupid.

  73. Rob

I ordered one but the Paypal link oddly would not allow me to do a bank transfer. Only echecks. It's great that it comes with a little carrying case. Would be kind of cool if it had wheel options, too. A soft inflatable tire might allow it to work on carpet or a surface like tile that has seams.

  74. theploeg

I was excited until I saw you won't ship to CANADA. 🙁 There is a lot of love you up here in Canada, hope you can figure out a way for us to buy your very cool dolly!

  75. Emm

    Post author

@Lensdude - That's one reason I made it as small as possible. In the video, I used some cheap hobby board (like balsa type wood) outdoors which was only 4" wide. Being incredibly small makes it easy to bring any type of smooth material to lay on a variety of surfaces. I have a small piece of foam board which works perfectly and is extremely lightweight. It also doesn't require much space for the circular circumference, unlike larger dollies.

  76. Lensdude

Fun! I made a DIY version some time back.

The portability with these kinds of rigs is nice. They are great for circle type shots.

The big downside is that they really need a super firm and totally smooth surface to glide on. You always see footage produced with these things shot on a smooth marble kitchen counter etc. But try using these rigs on a wooden floor, concrete, carpet, etc and you get all kinds of bumps and jiggles in your footage...

  77. Cam

Mark me down for the Canadian waiting list. I have a feeling there will be a lot of interest from Canada with the value of the dollar!

  82. Neil

I'm just saying this to be one of the "cool kids" but... Add me to the Canada list too. Please! Pretty please?

I can never be a cool kid without my Pico Dolly. I must have one. Now.

  83. Emm

    Post author

@omar - Thanks. The DSLR mounted just shows it can work, but it will really perform for all the small cameras. I use my HX9V for many B-Roll shots since it can shoot in full 1080/60p and I have friends who will be using this in many of those wedding beauty shots. Slow movements and variable angles will really up production value with just a small point and shoot. LOL.

  84. bulb

Got one, cant wait to play with this. Have been waiting for a long time on buying something to make my shots more dynamic because prices were always so high, I even tried a couple failed DIY's. The price on this is great, hope the quality proves to be great as well.

Will there be any way of knowing if you got reordered in time to get one from the initial shipment

  87. Mike Hannigan

So after looking around for an affordable, portable, well made dolly, I found exactly what I was looking for in the Pico Flex dolly! Not only that, but you can get a friction arm along with it, all for less than $100! Score!

    Fail. I hope they reconsider.
