Deadliest Catch Behind the Scenes with Jake and Josh Harris

Back in April, I met up with Jake and Josh Harris, two stars of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch and shot portraits of the brothers for People Magazine. The article had a look at where they are now, one year after their father, Phil Harris, skipper of the f/v Cornelia Marie‘s tragic death. It’s been 5 years since me the crew of the f/v Rollo were filmed for Deadliest Catch. Back then the show was popular, but now it’s a beast. Things have changed quite a lot in Dutch, and those who have starred on the show since the beginning have become huge celebrities. Who knew?

So, when I met Josh and Jake again after a few years time, I was pleasantly surprised that they were good guys. Genuinely humble and patient in spending a whole day with me in three locations around the greater Seattle area. Josh had just come back from a week at the playboy mansion and wore a watch worth six figures and drives a top of the line Mercedes, which was a bit ludicrous, but somehow he pulls it off with humility.

Here are some pics from the people mag spreads and some outtakes that didn’t make the very small cut:

Josh/Jake….I have to tell you, your Dad was one hell of a man. I cried at his loss, can’t say I will do the same for my own “father.” You were blessed to have a real man and fathers love, I think you know that. Love the show and hope some day to watch you guys taking the CM out on the Bering Sea. Blessing to you both in all you do!

No one recommends smoking, but you should
Know that many people who never smoke
or drink have strokes (including my own mother).
Stress is a bigger factor in causing strokes
Than smoking does. Think about Phil and when
He had his stroke,it was right after he caught
His son stealing his meds &learning that Jake
Was an addict! He couldn’t handle that stress.
That’s what caused the stroke, but too many
    People blame everything on smoking!

No one can judge them based on this tv show. It’s a great show but that’s exactly what it is a show on television. Television doesn’t air everything, it shows what is best for television. I love this show and feel privileged to be able to see Captain Phil Harris and meet Jake and Josh. However if you don’t know these guys, you shouldn’t be so sure to talk as if you know why anything happened. Part of rehabilitation is to admit your an addict and part of grieving is healing. It would take a lot more then $25k for the CM to get out for a season, more like 300k. Discovery could do it but its up to Jake and Josh to get licensed. I am praying and hoping to see them both do well. Phil was a dieing breed of men and I’m for all the men who are as he was, loving, tough, funny, happy and caring. We need more men like him.

I know there dad is proud of them, no matter where the future takes them. I can not imagine the responsibility that has fallen on both of them. Josh has bought the boat and she went under a full overhaul – the costs involved to any boat are astronomical – to run a commercial fishing vessel?? I plan to buy Josh’s book this week – The CM being a commercial fishing vessel – b-o-a-t means not “Bring Out Another Thousand, as it does for most boat owners – but Bring Out Another Ten-Thousand! Fair Winds Home Safe and Following Seas, to the Harris Brothers….

Way to go Josh. It’s awesome to see you taking life by the horns. I have a special place in my heart for your brother Jake. I as most lifers that go out to sea have a addiction. I work daily on it and so far knock on wood have 13 years. I truly wish Jake the best.

I just met Josh a couple of nights ago. All I can say is I’m speechless. He’s amazing. Can’t stop thinking about him.
