True arcade gaming |
For some time now, I've been clamoring to have the ability
to easily see world records for arcade games put into one nice list, so that I'd
have the ability to easily check out scores, without going through a web search,
or laboring through the Twin
Galaxies score section, and doing single game search after search after...
well, you get the idea ! So, I created one page (yes, the download time takes a little while - sorry about that !) with all the top scores for most
of the arcade game titles in existence.
Now, that's pretty nice, but, with Twin Galaxies deciding to take down some of their formerly sanctioned scores (like Star Wars, Tron, Joust, and more), and with some people actually beating arcade records using emulators on the computer, like MAME, I wanted to put the highest score for all of these games, no matter what the source, as long as the score has reasonable legitimacy. And, that's what I've done. Now, if you see any errors, false scores, and /or if you know of higher scores than those listed, and can reasonably show proof, and/or strong believability, then please and let me know. Indeed, if you have a score that qualifies, then you too can become part of... the CAGDC list (of true arcade game world records) !
One big note of credit is very deserved; 'Chris', whose home page is http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~slunk/, provided the basic informational template for this page, and saved me quite a lot of time in the process. So, a big thanks to him, and be sure to check out his link if you like performance cars. And, to further this notation, let me emphasize that while I checked out the scores on his original template, no doubt a number have crept in that were erroneous, false, or have a degree of legitimacy that's not reasonable. Therefore, this page will be a work in progress for some time, as I continue to research the original scores, and as interested players to ones that are questionable, or suspect in some way.
In order to cover the meaning of some of the chart categories that aren't obvious, I've included an explanation 'key' at the bottom of the page (click here to go there now). It's mostly there to explain the 'Platform / ROM set used' and 'Verification method / Game settings' columns, and it will also give you an idea of the original source for almost all of the scoring information listed. Now, without further delay, let's get on with the list...

referee (Susan LeVan, Mark Alpiger) / CAGDC TPR (factory - SU: 3; BU: every 15K; DIFF: all easy); start no higher than the 30K level; one hour time limit after start button is pressed | This was a score previously thot to be unable to be put on the scoreboard, as the referee in charge did not time it precisely enough. Later, I found out (from both AA and Donald Hayes) that the game took around 50 minutes, or perhaps just slightly more, so I am now including it. referee (Mark Alpiger) / CAGDC NMPR (factory - SU: 3; BU: 10K) | At an 'arcade party', held at Steve McBlane's arcade in PA, Jimmy played the Pac-Man there, and found his patterns didn't work. Therefore, we knew we were dealing with a non-regular ROM set, and determined that it was likely a harder version. referee (Mark Alpiger) / unknown, but probably factory | MDA: "I got the 3rd balloon on city 1 by accident, and warped with only 50 oil (I usually have 80+). But I gathered balloons and oil mainly on the next screen, and warped again, starting city 3 with approx. 177,000. Nice ! I also hadn't died to this point. I then oil-canned cars at the bottom with the rest of my oil, and lives, and got this score (my previous high was 577K). While I can see a 1,000,000 score, I can only see Frank and I getting 700-800,000 at this time." I wrote this the day I made the score. 'Frank' refers to Frank Seay, my gaming friend, and wr holder on Crystal Castles. It turned out that this was about my best score ever, while Frank went on to have a game that crossed 900K, and he got the infinite lives 'bug'. I think he killed it off just past a million, but I never wrote down his score, so I'm listing this one, since it's exact, and his is unknown. | Mark Alpiger / 01-30-2008 |

referee (Mark Alpiger) / CAGDC FPR (factory); first man only | At an 'arcade party', held at Steve McBlane's arcade in PA, I tried my hand at a few 'first-man' games on FF. This fantastic score was after about 12 attempts, over 2 days (and, on many of those games, the joystick control was sticking on one direction, tho not on this game !), and I made it onto level 15, after starting on level 4. This score topped my own previous record of 161,300, made 08-11-2007, 4:19 PM PT at Parkside Hall in San Jose, CA. | Mark Alpiger; photo / 01-20-2008; 05-23-2008 |

referee (Mark Alpiger) / factory | I first tried this variation at an arcade party in April, 2008, tho I tried doing it on one-man only (I got around 15K). I decided to go for a score at the 2008 Funspot tourney, and this was either my first or second try (not too bad). The machine was set to 5-men TGTS, but I tracked my deaths, and played the exact equivalent of factory settings on lives. This was a superb result, for so early of a try ! | Mark Alpiger / 06-07-2008 |

referee (Walter Day) / TGTS (factory default - SU: 3; DIFF: 1 (average); EASY TO WIN: EXTRA and SPECIAL) | Jimmy beat his own previous CAGDC record score of 5,000,000 (where he played cross-handed, made it all the way to scene 259, and had 18 men left when he quit, of his own accord), set 04-01-2007, 6 PM ET (3 hour game) at Challenge Arcade in Wyomissing, PA, at the 2007 CAGDCT event. replaces the previous scoreboard mark of 62,490 by Bryan
Wagner, set 03-18-2006 at last year's CAGDC

03-30-2007 by Frank Lupia.
RC didn't get the
pole position, but still had a time of 205 seconds. Note that this score is lower than TG's, as they used easier, non-factory settings (during the 80's VGMT). The TG settings today (also easier than CAGDC) are different; they use factory, for the sit-down. An explanation given to me on the easier (than factory) settings, was that they wanted to set it so the maximum possible score was obtained (even tho this is inconsistent, since almost no other games are set this way, by them). |

LM decided to play in public, in front of known SPM masters (like Todd Rogers), and put up this superb score. He started rather late in the day, but still managed 5M+, wrapping up the game just after midnight. Todd Rogers later commented to me that his play was "unbelievable" and "incredible". Les and Todd later related that he got 2.2M on his first man, which more than doubles the previous record-holder's wr mark (1,045,360 by Rick Fothergill at the 2000 Coronation Day event at Funspot). The previous high score was 3,570,600, set by Les at Funspot last November, during Rob Mruczek's annual vacation there. He reached stage 316 then. | Mark Alpiger; Les

Fire Condor (1980) - arcade |

||||
Explanation: This rare game (no KLOV listing or inclusion in MAME) is apparently a clone of Phoenix. TG has Tim's score listed as third place under Space Firebird, which may or may not be correct. Whether a clone of Phoenix, or an actual Space Firebird score, this score is so low in comparison to other scores in those tracks that I doubt it would be top score for Fire Condor, even as rare as that is. Thus, I'm assuming a clerical error. See the NOTE in Chip Away, above, for further explanation. |

07-01-1984: Arnold's on the Avenue / Seattle, WA | referee / TGTS (factory default) | The date and location noted are questionable (and likely wrong), as the TG Book 2 where I got the info incorrectly says that this score was done at the 1984 VGMT, which is not correct; David Palmer had the high score at that event. | TG Book 2; TG scoreboard / 09-26-2003; 01-18-2007 |
Explanation: David Palmer says he nearly maxed out the 9,000 mile score with 712K, so this one is likely either a 12,000 mile score, or was played on an 'easier' difficulty machine. Since neither can be determined, I removed the score, since the correct variation cannot be determined. |

Ozma Wars (1979) - emulation (MAME) / ozmawars ROM / MARP |
10,220 Steve Krogman |
||||
Explanation: This score is legit, and has actually been beaten by numerous players. I'm removing this game from the scoreboard because of it being a relatively obscure title. It was originally on the scoreboard because this game listing is one of many that were directly copied over from the informational template (see top of this page for more details) that served as the basis for the original scoreboard listings. I'm now 'weeding out' certain obscure titles, like this one. |

Pitfall II - The Lost
Caverns (1985) - arcade |
70,008,000 Luca Santorsola |
||||
Explanation: Rob Mruczek, former Twin Galaxies Chief Referee, has brought this to my attention as "flat out not possible", and explained that the points are simply not there to get any where near this mark (he says "MAYBE 2.5-3.0M is possible"). All of this is backed up by a top mark of just under 2.3M on MARP, and therefore the score is removed. NOTE: this game / score is one of many that were directly copied over from the informational template (see top of this page for more details) that served as the basis for the original scoreboard listings. I confirmed that most all of the listings were accurate, but some have slipped in that were not, or had an incorrect basis for inclusion. This is one such example. |

- marathon - arcade |
348,691,680 Brian King |
12-12-1983: ? / Durham, NC | referee / factory
Explanation: Ken House has brought this to my attention as a score that is not possible, due to the fact that the score must be a multiple of 25, which it is not. Of course, this could be a typo / clerical error, but there is another issue, in addition. More than one player has expressed severe doubt about a mark of around 350M, since it would take around 90 - 100 hours to play (breaks included), and no player in gaming history (arcade or otherwise) has been documented as reaching that length of play-time. While that alone may not be sufficient for removal from the scoreboard, the fact that the score is not possible, as listed, means removal is both necessary, and warranted. |

- tournament (5 men total) - arcade / TG (pulled) |
960,350 Robert Bonney |
07-02-1985: ? / Kirkland, WA | referee / SU: 5; BU: none; DIFF: level 5
Explanation: Robert Bonney has related the story on this score to me. Apparently, when he found out that the score was questioned, he thot back to the event, and in working thru how things progressed, he believes that the game was set correctly on the first day of his play, but when it was shut down overnight, it reverted to non-TGTS settings for his subsequent play, and he says he made the score when the machine was on (likely easier) non-TGTS settings. |

Rush 2040 (19??) - arcade |
1,501 'Jeremy' |
||||
Explanation: I could not find a listing on KLOV, MARP, or
anywhere else for a game with this name, but this is possibly referring to
San Francisco Rush 2049. However, that game scores using time, so the
1,501 is inexplicable if the SFR game series are what this is a basis for.
Because of all of these things, this will be removed from the main scoreboard. |

Triple Punch (aka Knock
Out!!) (1982) - arcade |
11,165,570 Leo Daniels |
||||
Explanation: I could not find a listing for Leo Daniels on this
game, or for Punch-Out!!, which he may have submitted a score for, and
for which this may refer to. However, despite the similar names, PO
and KO are totally different games. Since it seems to be some sort of
mixed-up listing, and the top PO score is higher, this
will be removed from the main scoreboard. |

Category Explanation Key
Game name (release year) | This information is usually garnered from the actual game's title screen. Note that the year of release is not necessarily the copyright date, as some games may be completed late one year, and shipped out early the next. Also in this column, you may see two listings, which show both arcade, and emulation, score results. This happens when the emulated score is actually higher than the arcade version. Finally, some of the games have play variations that are significant enough to warrant double-listings; for example, many titles have both a 'marathon', and a non-marathon (courtesy of harder settings), pair of scores. |
Score | This would seem to be self-explanatory, and it is, though I'll note that while the vast majority of game scores are expressed as points, a few are actually in dollars, and there are some that show a 'score' expressed in units of time. |
Platform / ROM set used | As you read through the list, you'll see that almost all games are played either on the arcade version (usually the 'dedicated' original factory-built version, vs. a conversion kit), or using an emulator (only MAME is listed, so far); this is the 'platform'. If available, I have information on what romset was used. This refers to the fact that many games have multiple versions of the 'programming', which usually only slightly vary (many times, it's just a 'bug fix', vs. any true playing differences, though that happens too). |
Player name | Here's another category that should be self-explanatory, but one thing to note is that most of the names listed for MAME scores appear to be odd ones. This is because they are actually gaming names, or 'handles', that the player uses (and they'll appear in quotes). |
Date: Location set (event) |
The date listed is when the actual game took place, and the location similarly is where the game took place. As expected, MAME scores have no real location (at least, that matters), so I generically name the platform the game was emulated on (usually a PC, meaning IBM-compatible; Mac refers to Macintosh) and note the 'where' that the score's INP file was found (so far, only on MARP). Arcade scores may list an arcade name (and the city and state that the arcade is in), but a few denote 'home machine'; this simply refers to the player's home, as they own the machine themselves. Finally, there will be some notations in parenthesis, which denote an event that the score was made at. Normally, this will be a contest, or some sort of gathering (like the annual California Extreme show). Abbreviations used are as follows: CAGDCT: Classic Arcade Gaming (dot com) Tournament; HAC: Houston Arcade Championships; TGDC tournament: “The Toughest Gun in Dodge City” tournament; VGMT: Video Game Masters Tournament; NAVGC: North American Video Game Challenge; CE: California Extreme; RMF trip: Robert Mruczek's annual week-long trip (in November) to Funspot. |
Verification method (person)
/ Game settings |
Scores that list a verification method of 'referee' or 'video' are culled from the Twin Galaxies database, and those that list INP refer to a MAME input playback file, which resides at MARP. The latter half of this column shows the settings that a game was played on. Most are at the factory, or 'default' settings that the game is originally set to. Some are modified by Twin Galaxies (TG), usually in order to stop the game from being marathoned. This is usually designated with the initials TGTS, which stands for Twin Galaxies Tournament Settings. As is noted, almost all of the settings are the ones used by TG, and if the MAME scores show a TG designation, then the emulator was a TG settings-locked version of MAME. While most score entries are culled from Twin Galaxies, four other scorekeeper entities currently appear. MARP stands for MAME Action Replay Page, which tracks MAME INP recordings, as noted above. The other three are: Hi-Tech Recreations International Scoreboard, which is abbreviated as HRIS; the APA (Amusement Players Association), which was an offshoot of TG, and founded by a former worker, Steve Harris; and, this domain, Classic Arcade Gaming (dot com), which is designated with CAGDC. Additionally, CAGDC uses these abbreviations to indicate which set of rules is in effect for CAGDC certified scores (note that games are always set to factory settings): TPR - Tournament play rules:
Game is played for exactly one hour. Now, on with the rest of the information for this section. If a person's name is listed in parenthesis (usually the referee), this indicates that it was that person who performed the verification. Their name is offset with a text color of maroon. As far as abbreviations used in the settings, here's the key
- SU: starting units (men); BU: bonus unit(s),
at the indicated point level(s); DIFF: difficulty. Also - APT:
allowed playing technique; BPT: banned playing technique. |
Comments | A pretty self-explanatory category. Here, I notate some interesting background info on the score, how it was set, and note the previous record on occasion. Player names and initials are offset with a text color of maroon. |
Information: source(s) / date entered | So that the information presented here can be verified independently, I have listed all of the sources where I obtained the details on the listed score. Also, the date(s) of entry for the entire set of information is noted. More than one date indicates additional information, or a significant correction, was entered subsequent to the original date listed. Where applicable, a link is provided, for ease of lookup. Finally, as above, names are offset with a text color of maroon. |
