About Black Dog Timberworks

Black Dog Timberworks is a small, owner operated company focused on traditional timber framed building techniques.  We are committed to celebrating the time honored art of craftsmanship while integrating current technologies to provide a beautiful and sustainable structure.  Precision mortise and tenoned joinery, draw bored oak pegs, and a handcrafted finish create a home or barn of unparalleled strength and beauty.

Personal Bio

Since graduating college with a B.S. in Natural Resource Management Rusty has been building Timber Frames for over a decade.  Throughout his travels he has worked on and managed literally hundreds of projects with some of the most reputable names in the business.  He feels extremely fortunate to be practicing a form of construction that is steeped in such a rich history and tradition.

His wife, Sara, daughter, Elja, and son, Esten are integral parts of the company. Sadly they had to bid farewell to Brooks, the company’s namesake, in the winter of 2015. He will always be remembered!

Together they live and operate out of their 70 acre homestead in western Maine where extensive gardens and their own grass fed pork and poultry nourish them year round.  They also  maintain a sugarbush and orchard to provide them with some of the sweetest treats of mother nature as well as providing an excellent excuse for annual backyard sugarin’ and cider pressin’ parties in the ‘bahn.’

They like to play as hard as they work and when not working timbers or tending the land they can often be found exploring the wild places of the northeast and beyond by boat, foot, and ski.
